BetterHelp

Tap a star to rate

BetterHelp was founded in 2013 and has grown into the largest standalone online therapy service in the country. The platform works on a weekly subscription covering unlimited messaging with your therapist plus a set number of live sessions per week, by video call, phone, or live chat. If the first match doesn’t feel right, you can switch therapists at no extra cost and as often as you need.

All therapists hold a master’s or doctoral degree with a valid state license and at least three years and 1,000 hours of clinical experience. Financial aid lowers the weekly rate for people who qualify, assessed through a short income questionnaire at sign-up. BetterHelp doesn’t accept health insurance, so it works best for people paying out of pocket or whose employer offers a wellness benefit that covers it.
